What Exactly IS a Pintabian?
The PINTABIAN HORSE
The Pintabian Horse is still known as a "rare" breed, with just over 500 horses currently in the Registry. If you desire color, stamina and a trainable, sensible horse, then the Pintabian may be for you.
PIN-TAY-BEE-AN is the correct pronunciation and as we start our description, it is important to note the criteria that makes this a NEW BREED of horse rather than just an entry in the color registries.
As you all ready know, there was a tobiano pinto, 7 generations ago that was crossed with an Arabian.  The tobiano color pattern is defined as non-symmetrical, with large irregular color spots.  As each generation produced this spotted Arabian, it was mated back to a 100% purebred Arabian to gain back the Arabian bloodlines until the "PINTABIAN" was produced.  Because the tobiano gene is dominant, genetics experts have known that it was possible to breed this pattern into an Arabian to produce a relatively "pure" strain of tobiano horse with over 99% Arabian blood.

To quickly determine the amount of Arabian blood, add the blood percent of the stallion to the percent of Arabian blood in the mare and divide by two.  This manipulation of blood factoring differentiates the Pintabian from the other colored horse registries.
One parent must be of 100% Arabian blood and the other parent a spotted horse to be of 98.4375% (Pintabian Producer) or higher Arabian bloodlines.  This combination produces a Pintabian foal, colored or not, in the Arabian Horse Association and Canadian Arabian Horse Registry as a half-arab, all the while keeping track of the Arabian blood percentage by the Notation on the AHA papers (see chart below).
This chart may help you determine the percentage of Arabian blood.
1/2 Arabian=50% Arabian blood, noted by "1A plus #" on AHA reg. papers.
3/4 Arabian=75% Arabian blood, noted by "2A plus #"
7/8 Arabian=87.5% Arabian, noted by "3A plus #"
15/16 Arabian=93.75% Arabian, noted by "4A plus #"
31/32 Arabian=96.875% Arabian, noted by "5A plus #"
63/64 Arabian=98.4375% Arabian, noted by "6A plus #"
127/128 Arabian= 99.21875% Arabian, noted by "7A plus #" (results in a Pintabian).

When two Pintabians are crossed with each other, the resulting foal still carries over 99% Arabian blood. Pintabian foals without the desired tobiano markings are eligible for registration as breeding stock, as they are still over 99% Arabian. Purebred Arabians may be registered as outcross horses to allow for additional bloodlines.

The Registration papers can be IDENTIFIED by the Golden Seal (See the Seal on my home page). Here is the # to the PHRI~ 218-436-7768 for more information.

A Pintabian is NOT TO BE CONFUSED with a Sabino Arabian, (or Purebred Arabian pinto).  Sabino Arabians have different amounts of white, these white markings do not extend over the topline, and are not tobiano markings.  Sabino Arabians are purebred arabian, while Pintabians can NEVER be a purebred.
You can reg. Sabinos, or any registered purebred Arabians, Pinto-Arabians with 98.6% Arabian blood as Pintabian producers, and Pinto-Arabians with over 99% Arabian blood as Pintabians, all with the Pintabian Horse Registry, Inc.  You can email any of the Pintabian Horse Registry members with any questions or contact the Registry at 218-436-SPOT.
